Recently I was introduced to a fairly new product in the production intercom world. Unity Intercom has released a software based product (Mac only) that allows users to download a free app on their smart phone and utilize full duplex, multi-channel intercom services. While the actual server is Mac based only, virtually any smartphone can run the app.
The product works over your existing WiFi network and can be setup for use with LTE connections as well. Our testing of the product worked well however it is limited to the availability and stability of your WiFi network. We experienced some drops and other issues that were a result of our WiFi network and had nothing to do with the software itself.
The design of the software is very smart. You purchase the system based on the number of users you will be using at any given time (and you buy more user licenses down the road as you please). Using their main server software you simply turn on and off the different accounts that you wish to have access to the intercom at any given point. For instance lets say you pay for 6 licenses. 30 people can download and run the app, but only the 6 you activate can actually use it at any given time.
The app also allows you to control who is talking and remotely shut off all microphones (a super great feature when someone leaves their microphone latched on).
The overall sound quality was great but we did experience some slight latency in our testing. So if you are trying to call a very specific “GO” on a cue it might be problematic. But for all around production communication it’s really a great deal.
If you’re looking to add production intercom to your church this is a product you should check out. As of the time of the writing of this review the base license was $499 and that included the software and 3 licenses.
