For the past many years, my church has been limping along on a patched up, half-baked sound system. It was frustrating for me in particular – I knew how good the worship team was, and I knew it just wasn’t coming through. They by and large were not connecting with the people because the sound system kept getting in the way. Finally, the church decided to make a bold move and update many much needed items around the church. This long list of needs included the sound system. About three weeks ago from the time of this writing the church had the new system installed. We already had a decent front of house console, so the upgrade consisted of acoustical treatment, new speakers and new processing. Well, let’s be real it wasn’t new processing – it was PROCESSING. With a $40,000 investment the church added a nicely balanced QSC speaker rig with matching subs and adequate processing to control the system (and acoustic treatment). The investment has paid for itself already. The worship team is CD-quality like and the system that once stood in the way of worship has now become the transparent piece of technology it should be. It has gone from a place that any volunteer dreaded to mix to a place that is exciting to mix. No longer are we fighting the system, but now we are USING the system. It was exciting to be in worship this morning and just become engulfed as the Spirit moved. The pastor, who now sees first hand the difference the system has made is often quoted as saying, “Man, we should have done this years ago”. And he is right – it should have been done years ago. People ask me all the time in all the technology in churches is needed. My answer is always the same – “No.” However, when we make the choice to use technology as a tool for worship, outreach, discipleship and growth it must be done with excellence. Anything else is simply creating barriers. Are you in a place where you are having to fight your system or are you in a place of using your system?
