True RTA - Product Review

I recently stumbled on some new software from the guys at TrueAudio.com. TrueRTA is a nice tool for any sound engineers pocket. First, it’s exciting because you can download the software for free and take it for a test run. They have minimized it’s effectiveness by only providing one octave of analyzing, but still letting you use all the tools. Once you’ve been bitten by the bug, you then have multiple levels of purchasing for this software - with the most expensive version only being $99!

I was amazed at how accurate this software seemed to be. I used it for the first time in a very difficult room. I was having troubles with the high-frequency - it was muddy, and I couldn’t get it just right. Once I plugged in my RTA microphone into my laptop, calibrated the software, and got things running with a little pink noise the problem was visually evident! I quickly made the adjustments with the offending frequencies and the room sounded fantastic! I was hooked.

This software offers many of the bells and whistles once only available for thousands of dollars. Now with one inexpensive software package you can view up to 1/24th octave REAL TIME, run signal through an oscilloscope, and more! Once calibrated correctly the noise from your sound card is out of the picture and your decibel reading is very accurate.

One of my favorite features is the ability to click on a specific frequency and highlight it. This allows you to see exactly which frequency is feeding back, too pronounced, or too soft. It also allows you to observe it from further away as you are tweaking the EQ. This type of accuracy makes this program really shine.

The software also includes the ability to print out your findings for your records.

Included in the software is an excellent tone-generator as well. This generator allows you to do single frequencies as well as full sweeps, check for polarity and more! For $99 and an immediate download this software was a no-brainer for me.

True-Audio says you need at least a 500Mhz Pentium computer to run this software. I was under specs using a 400Mhz celeron. I did notice a slight delay in response, but other than that it worked great! Obviously the faster the processor you have the better your performance will be.

True-Audio is taking full advanatage of the power in personal computing. If you are looking for a good audio reference without breaking the bank, I highly recommend looking at TrueRTA. Download the basic version for free from their site and see what you think for yourself.
